Leave a legacy
MAKE CURING LEUKAEMIA
After providing for your family and friends, please consider Leuka in your Will.
Many people leave gifts to charities as part of their legacy because the cause is important to their lives. It can also be a simple and poignant way to honour a family member.
Whether you have yet to make a Will or would like to amend your existing Will, the process is simple.
How to make a Will
1. Before you speak to a solicitor try and calculate the value of your estate, this will also help you to work out how much you would like to leave to charity. Click here for an online calculator.
2. If you do not have a family solicitor, then click here to find one near you.
3. To make a residuary gift to Leuka in your Will your solicitor will need to write:
‘Subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give the whole/____% of my estate not otherwise disposed of by this my Will to Leuka (A charity registered in England and Wales (1154856) of 52 Portland Place, London W1B 1NH, for the general purposes of Leuka and I declare that the receipt of its Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.’
4. Or, to make a pecuniary gift to Leuka in your Will your solicitor will need to write:
‘I give free of tax to Leuka (A charity registered in England and Wales (1154856) of 52 Portland Place, London W1B 1NH, the sum of £_____ for the general purposes of the Leuka and I declare that the receipt of its Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.’
How to amend a Will
To make an amendment you will need to complete and file a codicil with your existing Will:
A codicil is a document used to change a Will that has already been made.
It’s used as a way to make simple additions or amendments to an existing Will like a change in the amount of a gift of money, or the addition of an executor or gift. This is all quite straightforward but problems can occur if you ever want to cancel the Will in the future.
When you cancel a Will, which contains a codicil, the codicil does not get cancelled automatically, so when you write a new Will it can create inconsistencies and legal problems. To avoid this, make sure that any new Will clearly states that you are revoking all Wills and codicils previously made.
You can also make a codicil with a Will-writing advisor.
